I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness – “Faust”

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness

When I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness released their debut album Fear Is On Our Side in 2006, I assumed that they made anguished eyeliner rock in the vein of My Chemical Romance or Thirty Seconds to Mars. And some of those goth elements are there, but as my mother the shrink would say (if she were alive), they’re on the right side of the spectrum: intense instead of overwrought, dark but not brooding, sincere vs. cloying. That first record holds up today as an excellent companion to any intense mood you’re feeling; I expect the new one will as well.

I’ve no idea what ILYBICD has been doing during this eight-year delay, but it’s clear that they spent a good chunk of that time crafting angular, moody songs that stick with you after a couple of listens. Their new record is called Dust, it was produced by Ministry’s Paul Barker, and you can buy it starting October 28. “Faust” is the first single, and it’s a keeper:

The band will be playing their first show in four years with fellow Austin-ites and long-band-name enthusiasts …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead on October 30 at The Belmont in Austin. I wish them the best of luck with that marquee.
