TV On The Radio – “Happy Idiot”

TV On The Radio’s unique blend of joy, despair, ferocious intensity and sardonic humor endures on Seeds, their fifth full-length studio album.

The band lost founding member Gerard Smith to cancer in 2011, which could be part of why Seeds‘ lyrics skew more toward specific, heartfelt emotions than much of their past work. Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe says emphatically that this is the band’s best record yet; I think he may well be right.

No one captures the strange and beautiful absurdity of our world quite like this band does, and I love them dearly.

The music video for “Happy Idiot” is a giddy Speed Racer homage that’s a fitting portrait of the band’s badass/geek dichotomy.

TV On The Radio’s latest world tour started yesterday in Portland. See them if you can.
