HOLY – “premonition / ◯ / it shines through”

HOLY

Who is this young dude Hannes Ferm, and where has he been keeping this ebullient, symphonic psych-pop? Apparently in Sweden, under the guise of HOLY — a name that evokes the potent joy found in this astonishing music. Like a child who discovers the sustain pedal on a piano and bangs out a glorious chord, HOLY reveals a potentially transformative sound. The weird syntax in the title of “premonition / ◯ / it shines through” hints at one of his uncommon gifts: a flair for tape editing and track sequencing that results in an uncanny visual journey through sound.

There’s more of this to be had in HOLY’s new album, All These Worlds Are Yours. Sure, we could rattle off obvious precedents to this music, but why bother? This is one of those albums that induces an immediate emotional response, with an intensity I haven’t experienced in awhile. Maybe it’s no coincidence this album has landed from Sweden in the middle of winter, because HOLY offers a private stash of sunlight to keep you afloat through the long “Night On Earth”.
