Pujol – “Circles”

Daniel Pujol makes stripped-down, high-energy garage rock with artful lyrics and a wry sensibility. His vocal and instrumental style evoke Rocket From the Crypt and Supergrass, but his sound is more idiosyncratically lo-fi and his material more eclectic than either.

His band Pujol has produced a varied collection of 7” singles, EPs, and albums. The latest is Kludge, which they recorded in a music venue near Nashville that doubles as a teen crisis center. Pujol described his motivation in an interview earlier this year:

“I wanted a place where I could pursue recording ideas without the time pressure of a really expensive day-rate. You can get decent sounds in an acoustically treated music venue just like you can in a real, home, or warehouse studio, but not pay $300 or $500 a day. I would rather support a non-profit with a monthly rental fee than pay a bunch of money to blow through basic tracking in a week…

The owners would stop by with their kids before we started working, so we had a good dose of real human contact. I think that helped ground the process in human reality.”

In a characteristically unorthodox move, on September 27 Pujol is releasing an augmented and tweaked version of their debut LP United States of Being, now re-titled Reunited States of Being.
