Girlpool – “Blah Blah Blah”
|In Powers of Two: Finding the Essence of Innovation in Creative Pairs, Joshua Wolf Shenk identifies the primary characteristics shared by such dynamic duos as Lennon and McCartney, Parker and Stone, and Jobs and Wozniak. Among these characteristics is what psychiatrists call a “folie à deux,” a madness shared by two. Two people against the world, making up their own reality when the one handed to them just won’t due.
In the safe, secret handshake confines of creative partnership, people take far greater risks than they would on their own. Self-censorship be damned when the person you trust most looks at your precious, hatchling vision and says, “You’re not insane.”
Los Angeles power pair Girlpool, made up of Cleo Tucker on guitar and Harmony Tividad on bass, would appear to be engaged in a folie à deux that pushes both toward the type of vulnerability most people reserve for anonymous online confessionals or dive bar nights turned into embarrassing mornings.
With the sparest of instrumentation and the most straightforward of lyrics, these ladies have nothing to hide. Transparency is the name of the game, and the sounds are cathartic, catchy, and pure of heart.
Girlpool’s self-titled EP will receive a remastered re-release care of Wichita Recordings on November 18. You can catch Girlpool on tour in support of Jenny Lewis this fall and in residency at The Echo in LA this December.
