Your Friend – “Come Back From It”
|Friends, I’m bewitched by the enchanting new single from Your Friend, the recording project of Taryn Miller. Atop a primitive rhythmic chug, “Come Back From It” weaves a buoyant, ethereal soundscape out of gentle electric guitar and textural electronics: bedroom laptronica executed with skill and purpose. I haven’t figured out what Miller is singing about yet, but maybe I shouldn’t — maybe I don’t want to (ahem) come back from the shimmering underwater voyage that this song feels like.
“Come Back From It” is a highlight on Your Friend’s new album Gumption, a worthy addition to your go-to late-night music collection. Not unlike ambient music, the tracks here don’t require your full attention to make their impact. At times they seduce, as on “Heathering,” and other times they submerge you into a turbulent murk. Miller is concerned less with crafting melody than sonic atmosphere and emotional heft. The ace up her sleeve is that voice — a drowsy, velvety soprano that might fool you into thinking she’s from Baltimore instead of Lawrence, Kansas.
Gumption is out now on Domino Records.
