Dublin four-piece Girl Band really know how to make a deep incision, whether slicing through soundwaves or carving up a cadaver as happens in their new video. They also know their way around a single lyric, which in the case of “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?” — a cover of a dance track by British producer Blawan — becomes a mesmerizing 7+ minute process of asking this question over and over again until it practically explodes in your head. Although on paper this might seem to be some kind of torturous activity, the experience of it is in fact incredibly enjoyable, akin to the sense you might have as you hold your breath while the airplane achieves cruising altitude. Once there your ears may pop and you might breathe a little more regularly, but the sense of uplift is heady.
Girl Band lift this song right out from under you while the video unfolds like some kind of mad-scientist, Poe-like, tell-tale heart scenario complete with a dance-crazed coroner whose magic powers conjure up a companion who is so completely lost to the music that he’s dead to anything else. Well, actually he is in fact a dead man, but also an awesome dancer. Also, because I always like to solve a mystery, the names on the toe tag sent me on a search for hidden clues planted by the band. Sadly I didn’t come up with any resolution there, but Girl Band die-hards may have more luck.
This band of fellas, who are very much alive, are rumored to be wicked excellent live (see dates below for where to prove that point) as their fuzzy, pulsing sound seems to blur all the lines of melody and push right to the edge of ear bleeds. I can’t imagine a more fun way to go.
