Spires – “Sleepy Eyes”

spiresThe new single from Spires is a study in influence-soaked contrasts. On the one hand, “Sleepy Eyes” is a shaggy, shuffling blissfest with dreamy vocals that gets even slower as the track progresses. On the other hand, it’s got a bassline that moves around enough to get you moving, even if it is at half-speed, and makes your headphones crackle in a not-unpleasant way. In other words, it’s Monday-morning Madchester that’s good enough for Saturday nights as well. It’s “Elephant Stone” meets “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” in a Brooklyn warehouse, with all the swirling guitars and organ/synth drone that such a combination implies. It’s drowsy, it’s dance-y, it’s whatever your mood makes it.

You can catch Spires at the following CMJ dates in New York, and then on the road with Temples in select cities. Make sure to bring your dancing shoes or napping clothes – again, it’s all about your mood. If it were me, I’d do a little bit of both and love every minute of each.
