Deep Throat Choir – “Be OK”

Deep Throat Choir is a London-based all-women singing collective that’s been active since 2013. The group was formed by Luisa Gerstein (formerly of Landshapes); it started as a handful of friends and quickly expanded, staying true to a vocals-only performance style augmented by minimal percussion.

Their repertoire consists mostly of interpretations of other artists’ songs (like this 2015 live performance of Sade’s “The Sweetest Taboo”), but their upcoming debut album Be OK includes three original compositions including this one, the title track. They’ve also incorporated a bit of synth-bass into the mix of this vocals-driven ensemble.

After a decade of intermittent indie-rock bands seeming to make a virtue of atonal group yelling, I find these well-crafted and soulful harmonies very refreshing. And there’s a clear-eyed optimism in Deep Throat Choir’s sound that’s sorely needed in this foreboding moment of ours.

Deep Throat Choir’s debut album Be OK is out on February 17.
