La Femme – Amour Dans Le Motu

unnamed

I’m dating myself by confessing this, but some of us are still very affected by the vibe carved out on the B-52s’ first two albums: that cool, danceable fusion of sinister beach-guitar twang, kitschy retro styles, and sassy girls-and-guys vocals delivered in deadpan. French group La Femme keep this spirit alive, albeit with some necessary translations. For one, the female singers invoke their own national style of “yé-yé” pop once epitomized by 60s starlets like Francoise Hardy and France Gall. And this being the techno generation, La Femme are prone to let their grooves roll on and on in the manner of early-2K electroclash.

If this sounds like your thing, go find their most recent album, the riotous double-CD Psycho Tropical Berlin. Better yet, catch them on their whirlwind tour of North American next month.
